ASL Hike #2: Manoa Falls (06/20/09) : Aloha,
We had our 2nd monthly ASL Hikers hike on Saturday. This time we decided to go to Manoa Falls and what a beautiful and muddy day for it. Only 3 of us were able to show up this time (Sharon, David & Dale). We began our hike just as the rain was stopping so the ground was a bit muddy. Manoa Falls is a short trail but we took our time and took us about 45 minutes to get to the falls. Once there we all had a lite lunch and chatted with various other people that were showing up. A 8-year-old boy by the name of Chase from California came up to us and introduced himself to us in ASL. Apparently his older brother taught him some ASL. He didn't know a lot but it sure was fun anyways. Someone kept throwing there trash along the trail, so we picked up a lot of it along the way. All 3 of us had a great time and really hope that everyone can come for the next hike (keep an eye on Facebook - ASL Hikers - for more information).

Cleaning/Painting (10/10-10/15/09) : Aloha,
Here are some shots of our new place...mind you this is right in the middle of cleaning & painting so it looks worse than it turned out! Showed up on the property on 10/10 to find some people had gotten into a spat with the people upstairs and they had done a bit of damage to the area. DaBoyZ worked on cleaning it up. Next few pictures are of things we had to work on like marker on the wall and paint peeling. On one of our many trips to the new place we walked by the Tennent Art Foundation. The last group of pictures were taken after we finished painting. We later discovered we missed a spot on the door...see if you can spot the color difference in the last few pictures.

Misc Shots (09/24-09/25/09) : Aloha,
We were invited to the Hawai`i Premiere of Beautiful Son. The first 5 shots are from the opening ceremonies. A talented harpist was strumming her beautiful instrument while we enjoyed some pupu's.

Movie Synopsis:
In 2003, Hawai`i filmmakers Don & Julianne King realized something was wrong with their 3-year-old son, Beau. Around age 2 1/2, Beau started loosing his ability to speak, his coordination, and was becoming disconnected from the outside world. Determined to help Beau, his parents brought him to the best doctors in the U.S. and took along a video camera to document the results. Two months later, Beau was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

In BEAUTIFUL SON, Don and Julianne take us on their journey through the landscape of this debilitating neurological disorder as they attempt to recover Beau from autism. Along the way, through their research and personal interaction with various medical professionals, Don and Julianne come to believe the establishment has little to offer apart from advice of “good parenting” and behavioral therapy. Desperate to find help, they stumble upon a community of doctors and parents who are experimenting with alternative treatments and who are, they believe, successfully recovering some kids from autism.

BEAUTIFUL SON is the story of an illness reaching epidemic proportion, now affecting one in 150 children. And, it’s the story of a grass roots movement of parents and doctors who believe that vaccines, mercury and other toxins may be triggering some forms of autism and demanding research be done to help their children.

The 2 shots from 09/25/09 were taken in the Kaimuki area.

Pu'u Puai Overlook (09/06/09) : Aloha,
We jumped in the car after our dark walk through Thurston Lava Tube and made our way to the Pu'u Puai Overlook on the otherside of the Kilauea Iki Overlook. Pu'u Puai is a cinder cone that formed during the 1959 eruption at Kilauea Iki Crater. Pu'u Puai means "gushing hill." Gas leaving the magma propelled incandescent cinder and ash as high as 1,900 feet above the vent. Tradewinds blew the cinder and ash to the southwest, where it accumulated to form the cinder cone. With increasing distance to the southwest, the cinder and ash deposit gets thinner and the size of the volcanic particles gets smaller. Pu'u Puai parking area is on the rim of Kilauea Iki crater.

Kalapana (09/05/09) : Aloha,
After the tidepools we made our way to whatever was leftover of the town of Kalapana (Kalapana is a town and region in the Puna District on the Island of Hawai'i in the Hawaiian Islands. The area gained notoriety when the 1990 Kilauea lava flow from the Pu'u 'O'o vent destroyed and partly buried much of the Kalapana Gardens and nearby Royal Gardens subdivision. The lava flow that destroyed Kalapana erupted from the southeast rift zone of Kilauea. Along with the destruction of Kalapana were those of the nearby town of Kaimu and Kaimu Bay, both of which now lie buried beneath more than 50 feet of lava. The lava flow also created a new coastline). We walked out to the new black sand beach and to check out the new beautiful coconut grove!! Kapoho Tide Pools (09/05/09) : Aloha,
After leaving the Lava Tree State Park we made our way to the beautiful Kapoho Tide Pools. This unusually large collection of tidepools and spring fed pools stretches almost a mile down the coast and extend up to 200 yards out into the ocean. However, the feature that makes this site most interesting is the fact that some of the pools are heated -- volcanically heated! Many locals have incorporated some of the smaller pools into their property to use as swimming pools and "hot" tubs. The warm, brackish water is usually very calm, relaxing, and rarely crowded. Beautiful coral, great swimming, tons to see!!

Going to the Big Island (09/02-09/03/09) : Aloha,
We finally got a chance to get back to the Big Island after about 3 years. Thursday night we flew to Hilo, got a car, and drove up to Volcano Village and stayed at the Volcano Hale which is part of the Chalet Kilauea Collection. The Volcano Hale is a home that was built in 1914 and we rented the Elepaio room, a quaint room on the bottom floor of the home. The home had a shared sitting room, kitchen, living room, and bathroom. After checking in we took a moonlite walk to the end of Keonelehua Road. Their wasn't any city light pollution so we could bask in bright moonlight and beautiful collection of stars. Perfect night to the beginning of our vacation.

On the morning of the 21st, DaBoyZ went to the Neil Blaisdell Center (NBC) to help setup for the Made in Hawai'i Festival (MIHF). Dale made sure to get some shots of the booth just after setup, when it was exactly the way Deb wanted it to look. The next set is David's beautiful flower, the Blue Suede Shoes HIbiscus. That evening, DaBoyZ went back to the NBC and helped work the booth. Our "Created by DaBoyZ" cards did fairly well and our inventory needs to be restocked now. Hoku Zuttermeister was playing at the MIHF and we made sure to get a few videos of this talented performer (check YouTube later for an upload - http://www.youtube.com/alohalondon ). The short group of Aug 24th pictures consist of some more Blue Suede Shoes shots along with 3 pics of McKinley HS and a group shot of some worn out workers dropping the festival stuff back at the shop.

While taking in the view we saw a Honu swimming in the water!!! Many people were walking along the beach totally clueless to the beautiful within the azure waters!

Kalawahine Trail (06/07/09) : Aloha,
After climbing all the way to the top where Tantalus & Round Top meet, we jumped onto a trail we had never been on called Kalawahine Trail around 2:09 PM. Oh it was one of the most beautiful trails we have been on. It traverses through Pauoa Valley to Pauoa Flats and almost to the top of Mount Tantalus. Along the way we stopped in a beautiful area for a lite lunch. Once we started hiking and had gotten about a mile down the trail I realized I had forgotten my sunglasses. David watched my backpack as i ran along to find them. I looked all over the place and finally found them under this log and since it was getting dark it took me a bit to find the black sunglasses. We arrived at Pauoa Flats Trail and connected to Manoa Cliff Trail and connected back into Kalawahine Trail and came back onto Tantalus around 5:34 PM.

We did our debut hike atop Saint Louis Heights in the Wa'ahila Ridge Recreation Area. Six of us showed up for the first hike (Sharon, Trina, Benaline, Natasha, & DaBoyZ). Everyone had a great time despite all the accidents. Natasha fell several times and scraped up her knee, Trina crashed and burned, Benaline scraped her knee up, David got a cut, Dale has a huge bruise on his butt and hurt his hand, Sharon however was the only one not hurt. We slowly made our way down the mountain. When we arrived at the Wa'ahila Water supply towers we stopped for a lunch break. As we hiked down the mountain we came upon a homeless encampment and a dead end. We turned back around and started to hike back up the mountain. We came upon this open area as someone yelled out "HIKERS!". We thought we were being ambushed but quickly realized that it was just a bunch of people playing paintball in the woods. Koko Crater Botanical Garden (05/01/09) : Aloha,
DaBoyZ went out to Koko Crater Botanical Garden to see the beautiful Plumeria grove there! Koko Crater Botanical Garden is a 60-acre basin inside the landmark Koko Crater on the eastern end of the island of O'ahu. The hot, dry climate here makes this garden the ideal location for the dryland collections of the Honolulu Botanical Gardens. The garden is still in the early stages of development, therefore, restroom facilities, drinking fountains and other visitor accommodations have not yet been constructed.

Garden planting occupy the inner slopes and basin of Koko Crater. The visitor is first met with colorful collections of plumeria and bougainvillea cultivars in the outer crater. A two-mile loop trail leads visitors through a variety of dryland plant collections from Hawaii and around the world. Naturalized exotic kiawe and koa haole trees dominate the landscape along the trail between the cultivated collections. The four major collections arranged by geographical areas are: The Americas, Hawaii, Madagascar, & Africa. In addition to these geographical areas, other significant plant collections include: Cacti, Alluaudias, Sansevierias, Baobabs, Dryland Palms, Aloes, Euphorbias, & Adeniums. Of special note is the native grove of wiliwili trees (Erythrina sandwicensis) found in the Hawaiian section. This magnificent stand of native trees is protected by State law under the Exceptional Tree Act 105.

Koko Crater Botanical Garden is home to a collection of rare and beautiful plants from the tropical regions of the world. Some are rare or endangered in their native habitat. Long-range plans for Koko Crater Botanical Garden focus on the continued cultivation of rare and endangered dryland plants. Special emphasis will be given to the conservation of our highly endangered native Hawaiian flora. Basic xeriscape concepts will be used to support a drought-tolerant landscape in harmony with the surrounding environment.

Kaunala Trail (09/28/08) : Aloha,
We got to use miss Judy's vehicle again while she was out of town (mahalo again Judy for helping us discover this new place) so we headed to Pupukea on the North Shore and found this new trail!!! We drove up Pupukea Road up to the Boy Scout Camp and parked there and then walked up to the trailhead. What an amazing area. Never have I seen the North Shore from this perspective and we were just blown away. It was a very beautiful area and we could only hear the birds chirping and the wind in the trees that's how quiet it was here! However, this was a tough hike. It really made us work hard but well worth it!!! Many beautiful orchids too.

'Iao Valley & the Garden of Eden (09/20/08) : Aloha,
After Bailey House we drove back up into 'Iao Valley. Roger & Joanna had never been to 'Iao Valley so we were really excited to show them the pristine beauty of the valley. We walked up to the lookout and then took a offshoot trail about 1 1/2 hours back into the valley. We came upon this clearing that we dubbed "The Garden of Eden". It was chock full of bananas, Lilikoi, Strawberry Guava, & Thimbleberry's. We feasted on several of the yummy fruits before turning around and coming back. Along the way we ran across some local hippies rolling a joint and we found out that they were trying to hike to Lahaina. Once back to the main trail we stopped and waded into the stream to cool our hot tired feet. What a beautiful hike.

So David and I jumped on the Superferry and made our way to Maui once again. Once we arrived Roger and Joanna picked us up and we drove up to Napili to their hotel and snorkeled for a bit and then we all chatted for awhile before going out for some sushi & sake at Sansei, a Japanese restaurant in the area.

We worked out at the Navy Exchange (NEX) doing temporary tattoos on the kids for the Rubber Stamp Plantation.

When David got home he caught sight of this beautiful moon and took lots of pictures of it. Then when I got on the computer to work with the pictures I decided to be a bit artistic with some of them.
Enjoy,

We woke up and met up with Deb & Liz and went snorkeling at Ahihi-Kinau. What a great place to snorkel but we all got upset due to some of the tourists standing all over the coral (they thought it was rocks). We then went to Kihei Cafe for a great breakfast. Afterwards we all parted ways and David & I went off to the nude beach, Little Beach, for some fun in the sun (no pictures so no worry)!! When we were pau we took a drive to Upcountry and got some shots of an amazing sunset!
