ASL Hikers - Lyon Arboretum (10/17/09) : Aloha,
It was the weekend of our ASL Hikers group and we headed to beautiful Lyon Arboretum at the back of Manoa Valley. There was only 3 of us this time...David, Huy & me. We trekked onto some older less used trails that took us up the hill and down some gulleys until we came to a stunning view of Manoa Falls. Went to `Aihualama Waterfall but it was just a trickle. Had a great trip and Huy really enjoyed himself.

At the end of the Kalawahine Trail we connected with Pauoa Flats and went to the lookout. We hadn't been to this lookout in almost 4 years. It is just beautiful there and you can see through the Pali gap to Kane`ohe. The lookout is the end of Pauoa Flats trail (well the end of the official trail...there is another unofficial trail that takes you deeper into the mountains), so we turned around and headed down the trail towards the intersection of the Manoa Cliff Trail.

ASL Hikers - Pu`u Pia (09/19/09) : Aloha,
For our monthly ASL Hike we went to one of our favorite hikes....Pu`u Pia. This beautiful hike in back of Manoa Valley (the valley of rainbows). Lori and Dale were the first to arrive (David had to work). Dianne, Ryan, Will & Jamie arrived soon afterward and we all headed up the trail. Once we arrived to the halfway point we saw tons of strawberry guava all over and around the trail. Everyone began picking and eating the yummy fruity treats and we met several other hikers doing the same thing! At the end of the trail we even found some guava! We all had an awesome hike and are looking forward to the next hike at Lyon Arboretum.

After the beautiful hike on the Manoa Cliff Trail, we veered off onto Pu`u Ohia Trail. This trail takes you from the end of the Manoa Cliff trail through the bamboo forest to the top of Mt. Tantalus. The normal trail follows a Hawaiian Telephone service road, however near the green building is a trail through the bamboo that takes a fantastic route with some great views of Manoa Falls. It eventurally meets back up with the official Pu`u Ohia trail. Had another great hike up into the mountains behind our apartment. Can't wait to do this hike for an ASL Hike!! Pu'u Puai Overlook (09/06/09) : Aloha,
We jumped in the car after our dark walk through Thurston Lava Tube and made our way to the Pu'u Puai Overlook on the otherside of the Kilauea Iki Overlook. Pu'u Puai is a cinder cone that formed during the 1959 eruption at Kilauea Iki Crater. Pu'u Puai means "gushing hill." Gas leaving the magma propelled incandescent cinder and ash as high as 1,900 feet above the vent. Tradewinds blew the cinder and ash to the southwest, where it accumulated to form the cinder cone. With increasing distance to the southwest, the cinder and ash deposit gets thinner and the size of the volcanic particles gets smaller. Pu'u Puai parking area is on the rim of Kilauea Iki crater.

ASL Hike #2: Manoa Falls (06/20/09) : Aloha,
We had our 2nd monthly ASL Hikers hike on Saturday. This time we decided to go to Manoa Falls and what a beautiful and muddy day for it. Only 3 of us were able to show up this time (Sharon, David & Dale). We began our hike just as the rain was stopping so the ground was a bit muddy. Manoa Falls is a short trail but we took our time and took us about 45 minutes to get to the falls. Once there we all had a lite lunch and chatted with various other people that were showing up. A 8-year-old boy by the name of Chase from California came up to us and introduced himself to us in ASL. Apparently his older brother taught him some ASL. He didn't know a lot but it sure was fun anyways. Someone kept throwing there trash along the trail, so we picked up a lot of it along the way. All 3 of us had a great time and really hope that everyone can come for the next hike (keep an eye on Facebook - ASL Hikers - for more information).

As we hiked down the mountain we came upon a homeless encampment and a dead end. We turned back around and started to hike back up the mountain. We came upon this open area as someone yelled out "HIKERS!". We thought we were being ambushed but quickly realized that it was just a bunch of people playing paintball in the woods. Tantalus-Arboretum Trail (04/26/09) : Aloha,
We came out onto Tantalus and then headed down the mountain. As we were walking we came across the hidden Tantalus-Arboretum Trail which was this itty bitty trail that looped back into the woods and had some impressive trees along it's course.

Kanealole Trail (04/26/09) : Aloha,
DaBoyZ were looking for a new adventure and thought they had discovered a big loop that would take them back up to Pauoa Flats and around Mount Tantalus and down the mountain back into the Makiki Forest Recreation Area. Unfortunately the attempted hike didn't work out. No need to worry though, we still had a wonderful time and discovered a new trail we had only read about but couldn't find. This is the Kanealole Trail section. A very nice hike back into the Makiki Valley with a mini-botanical garden of Hawaiian plants towards the beginning of the trail (just after the first bridge after you get onto Kanealole Trail.

We got to use miss Judy's vehicle again while she was out of town (mahalo again Judy for helping us discover this new place) so we headed to Pupukea on the North Shore and found this new trail!!! We drove up Pupukea Road up to the Boy Scout Camp and parked there and then walked up to the trailhead. What an amazing area. Never have I seen the North Shore from this perspective and we were just blown away. It was a very beautiful area and we could only hear the birds chirping and the wind in the trees that's how quiet it was here! However, this was a tough hike. It really made us work hard but well worth it!!! Many beautiful orchids too.

Hau`ula Loop Trail (07/19/08) : Aloha,
Since the last 3 weeks have been so hectic and with the loss of my beloved friend we decided we needed to escaped the concrete jungle and return to our roots in the forest!! David had me do some research & I looked up trails that were far away and that we might not be able to reach as easily by bus. I found 2 trails in Hau`ula (Hau`ula Loop Trail & Ma`akua Ridge Trail). We got some amazing views of a hidden & seemingly untouched valley, and some amazing shots of La'ie Point & the Windward coast!! Needless to say this went a long ways towards making us feel more sane & more in touch with each other & ourselves!!
