DaBoyZ05  > Events > Honolulu AIDS Walk 2009 (04/19/09)
Aloha,
DaBoyZ and a few friends participated in the 2009 Honolulu AIDS Walk. Mahalo nui loa to all of you who helped support us (John Berestecky, Kim Bond, Jenni Book, Dianne Carroll, Jan Fried, Mellanie Lee, Freda London, Dale Peterson, Michael Peterson, & Layce Reed) in our newest adventure!! We had a really fun time this year and had 2 new team members (Dianne & Kreanna)!! Half way through our walk we picked up an honorary member of the team, Glynnis. We started at the bandstand and headed around Kapi'olani Park towards Diamond Head on Kalakaua and then up and around on Paki, past the Paki Playground, Honolulu Zoo & Queen Kapi'olani Garden and then a left on Kapahulu and around on Kalakaua and back to the bandstand. When we finished up we went to Hula's and had $2.25 Bloody Mary's & Mai Tai's and hung out for about 2 hours before heading out. Had a great walk and can't wait till next year when we do it again. If your interested in joining our team or sponsoring our team next year let us know and we will let you know when we can start accepting donations.

DaBoyZ05 > AIDS Walk is a walkathon fundraiser that raises money to combat the AIDS epidemic.
DaBoyZ05 > The funds raised from AIDS Walks usually benefit a local AIDS service organization (such as Gay Men's Health Crisis, Whitman-Walker Clinic or the AIDS Project Los Angeles), which provide services and advocacy for local community residents who are infected with HIV.
DaBoyZ05 > They are also often credited for being effective tools of public outreach, community empowerment, and education for the issues surrounding AIDS.
DaBoyZ05 > AIDS Walk fundraisers are a primarily American phenomenon because the United States has no nationalized healthcare system, and the services provided by local AIDS service organizations may not be otherwise accessible to people who are HIV positive.
DaBoyZ05 > This makes community support of AIDS service organizations through fundraisers like the AIDS Walk absolutely essential to help prevent the local spread of the disease.
DaBoyZ05 > In a typical AIDS Walk, participants walk a predetermined route (usually 5 or 10 kilometers long) through a city or town. (from wikipedia)
DaBoyZ05 > Many AIDS Walks have team programs that encourage organizations such as churches, schools, and corporations to participate together.
DaBoyZ05 > Many events also have opening and/or closing ceremonies which feature speeches and performances by celebrities, community leaders, and politicians.
