The original palace, built during the reign of Kamehameha III, was a one-story Greek-revival building made out of coral block that was only third the floor area of the present palace.

It just had a throne room, a reception room, and a state dining room as well, with other houses around for sleeping and for retainers.

The statue had it's origins in 1878 when Walter Gibson, a member of the Hawaiian government at the time, wanted to commemorate the 100 year "discovery" of Hawai'i by Captain Cook.

The legislature appropriated $10,000 for the project and made Gibson the director of the project, which originally included native Hawaiians but they soon were off the project and Gibson ran ...

Lunalilo I  born William Charles Lunalilo (January 31, 1835 - February 3, 1874)  was king of the Kingdom of Hawai'i from January 8, 1873 until February 3, 1874.

He was born the son of High Chieftess Miriam Auhea Kekauluohi) and High Chief Charles Kanaina.

He was grandnephew of Kamehameha I.

Hokule'a is a performance-accurate full-scale replica of a wooden sailing vessel (Polynesian voyaging canoe) used in ancient Hawai'i.

Its name means "star of gladness" in Hawaiian, and the name refers to the star Arcturus, a guiding zenith star for Hawaiian navigators, which falls directly overhead at Hawai'i's latitude.

It was built in 1975 by the Polynesian Voyaging Society, and is best known for its 1976 voyage from Hawai'i to Tahiti, performed without modern navigational instruments.
